The Marina offers access to San Francisco Bay and Marina Green, a grassy playground with views of the Golden Gate Bridge. The Marina District is favored by joggers, sunbathers and kite-fliers. While you’re in the area, you may also want to the visit the Palace of Fine Arts and Chestnut Street shops, restaurants and bars.
Nob Hill
Nob Hill offers one of the best views in the city, as well as Grace Cathedral (a replica of Notre Dame in Paris), Nob Hill Masonic Center, Huntington Park, and the Cable Car Museum.
Japantown
J-Town is centered at Post and Buchanan Streets where you’ll find Japan Center, a 5-acre complex of shops, theaters, sushi bars and restaurants. Favorite destination include a five-tiered pagoda, Nihonmachi Mall (which imitates a traditional Japanese village), and the Konko Kyo Temple. As you walk, you’ll be able to shop for Japanese vegetable seeds, kimonos, silk calligraphy scrolls, and tea ceremony utensils. The Cherry Blossom Festival in April is a must-see.
Chinatown
The “Dragon’s Gate” entrance to Chinatown at Grant Avenue and Bush Street leads you into 24 bustling blocks of exotic shops, food markets, temples, restaurants and tea bars, and small museums. You’ll want to explore this fascinating district on foot.
The Embarcadero
Make sure to visit this waterfront with its scenic deep-water piers and ferry service. The renowned Ferry Building is where you’ll find upscale shops, restaurants and a farmers market.
Presidio
At the end of Lombard Street is a lovely waterfront area known as the Presidio. A converted military post, the Presido is now a national park and recreational area. Visitors relish the gorgeous views, enjoy the walking/bicycle trails, and tour its historic and architectural treasures. Most Presidio activities are free.
